I recently tried this trick some time ago and it worked super great for me on my Surface Pro 3. This is why I warn people who buy laptops (much less desktops) to avoid ANY that use an Intel HD based GPU and instead look for a "true" dedicated GPU (be it soldered or inserted) such as a NVidia or ATI as they will provide their own resources (aka VRAM and its "own" Processing Units) instead of taking it directly from other parts of the system to avoid creating a bottleneck. The reason why onboard GPU's are redundant when it comes to gaming is because they come in two variants.ġ) They're a separate chipset on the motherboard but it requires access to RAM to provide storage for graphics/textures.Ģ) They're "embedded" in the CPU itself which require both "cores" from the CPU and RAM to store graphics/textures. Onboard "Intel HD" based GPU's aren't exactly what one would call reliable as it has been proven time-and-time again that people run in to issues with them being "slow" and "unresponsive" when processing graphic-intensive games, especially when most game companies state they do not recommend nor support them (the key word being "most" in this case). No offense is intended but maybe it's time to invest in a dedicated video card instead of using the onboard GPU? For now, using a lower resolution and hopefully some of this guide, will have to do.

So if none of this works for you, wait for the next update if you want smoother FPS. (So you could technically be running at 30 fps.) I've left mine at 5, because it eliminates a lot of the entity slow-mo, and makes it a bit easier to build, platform, or fight things in the rain, or if there's a lot of entities on-screen.Īlso keep in mind that Chucklefish is working on optimizing Starbound. Setting "maxFrameSkip" to 1 means it can skip 1 frame every frame. So, for example, Starbound is running at 60fps, but is having issues. Setting "maxFrameSkip" to higher values, tells Starbound to skip up to "maxFrameSkip" amount of frames if it's struggling. FPS increases may not reflect on the actual gameplay, but may make the visuals seem to move smoother. Keep in mind that Starbound is a tile-based game, and as far as I can tell, relies on a tick speed to do things. Disabling vsync is miniscule, but allows FPS over 60 if you really want to cram the frames in.

Weird entity slow-mo is slightly less present, but still there.Īlmost no slow-mo, even in rain. I just noticed a bit of an FPS increase when I turned it off. Launch Detailsīit of a disclaimer: I don't actually know what renderSleep does.

Skip to the bottom if you want simpler results, plus a tutorial on how to boost your FPS and help deal with that strange entity slow-mo.
However, even a system with the same specs may run Starbound differently. Since I'm sure not everyone is running on the same machine, I'm including the specs of mine, for reference. So I've been running some tests this morning, since I was curious on how one may be able to boost their FPS even a little bit.
